Tacos are thought of as a fun junk food item, but they can be very nutritious and incredibly tasty. There are some tricks to making the perfect tacos.

Tacos

It doesn’t matter whether the tacos are for lunch, dinner or a late night snack. They need to be perfect and healthy for you, too. There are some keys to making them and it isn’t by using powders in packets.

Tortillas

The tortillas can be either corn or flour, but they need to be made fresh. If you don’t have a tortillaria near your home, you’ll have to make them yourself. The learning goes a lot faster if a Mexican cook shows you how, but you can figure it out with some practice.

Flour tortillas are made with bread flour and they are rolled. The key to making them is to let them sit for about 15 minutes after kneading the mixture. Then roll them thin.

Corn tortillas are made with masa harina and are pressed. You need to let the mixture rest after kneading also, before pressing them.

Beef Tacos

The best beef tacos use not hamburger, but sliced steak or shredded brisket. Grill the meat to the way you like it, slice it and immediately put it into the warm tortilla. Squeeze lime on it.

Chicken Tacos

Bake or grill a whole chicken then shred it. Warm up the chicken shreds on a grill just before serving. Using a little bacon doesn’t hurt.

Bean Tacos

Any type of spicy beans make great bean tacos.

Taco Toppings

You can use cheese to top your tacos, but they are healthier with vegetables. Shred cabbage, cilantro or lettuce and add it along with slices of avocado, chopped tomatoes and salsa.
